Setting up a small-scale kindling business - advice required

If I started now with limited budget and only doing it part time I wouldn't process anything myself, just buy and sell. Start small and build up but without having to worry about any machinery! They are nothing but a pain and it doesn't matter what you but they will always cost you money and time.

You don't have to worry about drying it either! Find a good supplier for kindling and logs and just sell it on.

If you have a £1,000 kitty, buy £1,000 worth of kindling wholesale. You will probably double you money easily for not doing much work at all.

For a £1000, I'll sell you some, but to be honest I'd rather sell you a £160 worth (100 nets) to begin with and see how you get on

Where you based?

I never know what to tell people starting in kindling. Am I going to continue yes I am, would I start from scratch now the answer would be no.

If you cut a pile of 6 in blanks and feed them and bag them yourself you will do about 30 bags an hour. I bet you won't be far behind with a hatchet. The kindlet comes into its own when there are 2 people and the stock going in is on the small side.

If you have a good local market I would keep it simple. I would not worry about the supermarkets in a week or so the firewood will be pushed to the back of the store to make way for the Christmas toot.

If people can spend a million on a house and 140 k on a Range Rover they don't tend to shop round for things like kindling as the price looks reasonable who knows what a bargain price is for kindling or how much you get in a bag.

GensetSteve, Farmer Ben, Ash Smith and FJ Matt - thanks for your input. It makes complete sense and I appreciate you sharing your ideas with me. It actually occurred to me this evening that this may be the easiest and least risk way forward so your ideas have reinforced what dawned on me a couple of hours or so ago. I'll be making some phone calls tomorrow. FJ Matt. I'd rather not disclose my location just yet but I'm a long way from you. Thanks for the offer, anyway.

So not far from us then  most of our customers specialise in selling logs so are most efficient concentrating on that. We don't sell logs but have geared up just to do kindling.

You could do some your self and top up with ours if you can't keep up. You should get 250 in a transit van.

Thanks again; gives me more numbers to work with, although, what size are the bags? Anyway, I'll be calling potential suppliers today and if the figures work out, with a bit of luck I could be selling later on in the week. If it goes according to plan, of course....

We do a top quality tight packed orange net 40x50 weighing about 4 kg bone dry. We now also do a green net which is slightly larger generally tight packed but not as neat 60x45 weighing about 6 kg both the same price. If your not far away come over for a look. Pm sent with price.

you wont do the 60-100 bags per hour they claim but its pretty efficient if you are set up properly with a supply of boards cut to length.

The bag filler does work but we prefer using a separate bag filler.

theres one on ebay for £1800
