As some will be aware i was asking about framing chisels a while ago. Well i still havent got some, but whilst just scouring the net, i came across this company Hand Tools | Windy Smithy

They make socketed chisels and thought about contacting them about making me some chisels to suite, but without the handles, and then get someone off here to make / fit some decent handles to them.

This then would mean i have a very personalised set of chisels.

Opinions please. ( sorry for the derail / hijack )

I've been using the blue Stanley chisels for a while. They are okay as a very basic chisel but nothing to write home about.

From what I've read on other forums the Ashley Iles chisels are high quality and very good value for money. Someone even rated them close to the Barre chisels (very expensive). Not sure if they make extra long framing chisels but could be worth asking.

I did have a look at the WindySmithy website, lots of lovely looking stuff but I wondered what the chisels would be like as the surface finish looks quite rough...

cheers, steve

Got my socketed 1 1/2" framing chisel from wells trading post for £12. Definatly worth a visit.

Windy make some nice quality specilist framing tools. I have one of their froes and its decent, but never used their chisels so can't comment on the finish. Definatly worth paying extra for a well backed chisel coz it can easily take a few hours to get it right. If I think about the amount of time i've spent restoring car boot sale tools I could have bought new... Satisfying though and I do like old tools.
