Cost per Cord - 2015

How are the wood prices looking in your area for the year? Here in the states the reports are saying that the price per cord is up compared to last year and that the price of natural gas is down. Not sure exactly how that work, supply and demand and all, one would think that if the cost of one heating fuel is down it would take demand of other heating fuels and thusly adjust their prices down as well. :confused1:

I think its Biomass to blame for putting prices up rather than demand for logs. Biomass demand is not linked to Oil or Gas because most biomass users are just farming the RHI and in most cases can only use wood derived fuel.

we gave up trying to buy wood in this year everyone we called had nothing to offer and no hardwood felling planned we will just make do with what was in the yard and hope some comes to market next year. still amazes me people selling £40 a cube when timber is becoming so hard to source.

We have been using biomass fueled heating for about 10 years now and as Duffryn says along with most we are locked into wood fuel. We buy a few thousand tonnes of slab and roundwood each year and season for around two years so we are committed to maintain this in advance of use. The first boiler was pre RHi and payed for itself in just over 3 years. The second was eligible for a stupidly high amount of RHI so costs next to nothing to run. Over this period demand has obviously pushed prices up a little but be biggest jumps for us seemed to have coincided with power stations coming on line. When we started slabwood was at giveaway prices but when Slough started there was a big jump, in fact there was some breaking of agreements as higher prices were being offered. Similar situation with round wood though not quite so marked. Inflation plus a bit although lower oil prices must have limited its rise recently.

None available or not at available at price you were willing to pay?

Ok interesting.

One would hope that as result of current and forecasted shortages of all timber we'll see the FC or one of the other quangos actually start planting with a view to addressing said shortages.

I'm not holding my breath though.

If landowners stopped murdering hedges every year, then there would be plenty of firewood.
