If it is of help to anyone I found that the National Parks Service in the States has published a good visual guide to timber framing techniques and it is available online. It is American obviously so it does vary from timber framing tradition in the UK but it is useful nevertheless.

Otherwise the 'Discovering Timber Framed Buildings' little book is one of the best starter guides for the subject.

Yep. These are really quite simple to understand and follow. Give some good explanations of the framing principles. One of them is based on American framing styles but still a good read.

I learnt a lot when I was doing my self build so just PM if you need more help.

Hi jez.

 

Is there any chance you could email them to me too please? I'd like to make a timber framed log store, or Garage, or barn depending on space and materials! But I can't quite get my head around the different joints and where to use which.
