Hi Jon, our woodland and meadows are wet most of the year - during last years hot Summer we didn't water anything but everything grew very well. According to the old maps it was marshland, drainage ditches were added and that dealt with a lot of the marsh.

 

We have quite a lot of big (some are very fat) old Welsh oaks which must have been planted as a buffer protection for the overstood coppice (mostly comprising of hazel). Our oaks cope really well with the watery conditions. There's also a fair amount of Willow around our plot.

The best mix for perpetually wet ground would be Common Alder and the 'pioneer' species - Silver Birch.

 

Both fast growing and will give you some quality Firewood in the future.

 

Don't forget decent 14/16 canes and tree guards.

Italian Alder was very fast in test plots I remember that but it was mulched.
