Dampers blowing are pretty much always down to the brakes not being correctly adjusted IME. If you feel the chipper/trailer bumping when you brake get it adjusted up by someone who knows what they are doing ASAP or the damper will be quickly destroyed. Setting up trailer brakes correctly is a bit of a dark art as far as I'm concerned - I'm not bad with spanners but I always leave this to someone who really knows what they are doing.

 

I would say that, certainly in my case with the GM, your are dead right.

As an addendum I received the parts from Bradley today and fitted the new hitch and gas strut, tightened up the brake set up and now it's a pleasure to tow (clearly up till today, the brakes weren't engaging at all)
