Firewood Business Advice

Hello,

I am new to the forum and am in the thought process of starting a new log business here in NI.

 

I installed a log gasification boiler (plumber by trade!) and am now starting to look about my fuel for next year. I had toyed with the idea of pellet / chip burner etc but decided to go with log burner!

My idea being; I would purchase an artic load of hardwood (currently £1100) and then process (hopefully a few days). Keeping the majority of it for myself and selling on a small quantity to see how it goes. My intentions are that if I sell say 30 builder bags approx that should pay for my initial outlay of timber and thus my firewood would be free!

This is to start with. If there is a larger demand I would get possibly another artic load!

 

However that was until I realised I had to purchase the log processor. There are none for hire over here and the costs I am getting so far for a new machine is £6500 for Palax Combi II OR £8200 for Hikki Pike.

 

In grand scheme of things I realise they lose very little value but it might be a little on high side to start of with.

 

An advice or recommendations would be a great help and much appreciated!!

1100 seems a bit steep how many ton you talkin,16 ton in cornwall about 600 quid,i think your idea needs more thought,or stick to plumbing,more profit than firewood.

well if i was you i would buy the bags you see on garage forecourts for trade price £2.00each and sell them @£3each.that way you dont have to outlay for machinery im willing to sell you nets of softwood seasond logs @£2each if you order a thousand ill do them @£1.80.My customers sell them for £3to£4each.you would have to collect from north wales.

Kindlett, I can buy them trade in Cearnarfon at a £1 each... Dearest I've seen trade is £1.75

 

 

 

Kevy, you dont need a processor to do what you need. Just a chainsaw and splitter.

 

Having said that, why not buy the split firewood in bulk? If you speak to Clark Cunninghams, I'm sure they'd do you a good deal on a big bulk delivery, or Desi Grey in Derry might do the same. Got a few other contacts if you need.

HI mr ed who are you getting them off for a quid a bag ive got a good idea my nets 65cm*45cm and 10to 12 in every net.if they are the same size ill buy some myself give me his name and number.we all need to make a living.
