stumps

hi there im a new member on here, its great reading stuff on here, you learn a lot.

i jus wanted to hear other peoples opinions on this:

ive been stump grinding for about a 7 months now i use a camon c500 grinder, which i find does the job nicely, and ive done a few four footer stumps with it,however one in particular was a massive wellingtonia stump, which i managed to grind it down to 13 inches or about a foot under ground.

can the bigger hydraulic grinders go any deeper than this? and is it possible to completley remove a 200yr old stump.

Depends on which grinder. I've used an 8018 Carlton that will grind down about 20 inches, and take a 4 ft stump out in about 3 minutes. Its quite easy at that speed to back up and blow the rootplate out completely. I also build a stumpgrinder for fitting on a mini excavator, and that has within reason, unlimited depth grinding.

i have seen a mini digger with a donkey engine on the back of it, it was at the apf 5 years ago, it has all the forestery guarding, ias edd says it can go down as far as the arm will reach, it was a shortened re enforced one though..

yeah i see what you mean, i must admit, having seen the bigger ones in action, u can actually pull the dirt out and grind deeper, that is the one big thing i would criticise about my one its not self driven, which would help a lot with working on slopes.

what other teeth are there to use? i mean when i brought the grinder it came with rayco superteeth does anyone else use these there quite pricey?.

ive changed to greenteeth, and got a greenstone to regrind them.

The minidigger with the donkey engine was originally built by Justin kingwell, but was bought by gristwood and Toms. I've had it on a job, and it is pretty awsome.

 

The Rayco superteeth are great, I used to re-tip mine, buy the tips in bulk and braze them on. I'm not mad keen on the greenteeth, very aggresive and wipe your bearings out.

 

The absolute best I've used are the Sandvik square teeth, I fit these to my own grinders, and the performance is way ahead of anything else I've used.

yeah i actually agree there they do seem quite agressive, and ive noticed the bearings are a little noisier, also they tend to cut to much sumtimes and make it jump, were can you get those sort of teeth from?

Trouble with the sandviks, you need a complete new disk for them.

ah gotcha, whats your opinion on these pedestrian grinders?, i would say it does the job, but i think stumps over 3ft wouldnt be a good idea, as ive found out myself, it takes too long, and very hard work, but im definately keen to work my way up to the hydraulic ones.

i was thinking about possibly getting a carlton sp4012p. they seem to be a pretty good allrounder?
