Jon for a small pen with 12 birds just make pen sections so you can move to clean ground and make a net roof.

It will depend if you want the birds to destroy the grass or not. If you can keep the rain off the area it will be clean and dry. The birds will like dusting themselves and you will not need a very big run or put a dusting area in a larger pen so you keep some grass. Dusting area can be made with a roof made from a couple of corrugated iron sheets on four legs with a bit of a slope.

Jon,

Move to France, foxes are almost extinct here because they are dealt with by La Chasse - no cuddly bunny brigade here.

Jan our elderly neighbour down the road lets her chickens roam loose & claims shes never lost one although I did see one narrowly missed by a car on the rue de la marie

Ive seen one live Fox & one dead one & thats it in several years & long may it continue.

1 Square metre per bird if covered run. 3 Square metres per bird in open topped run should be about right.

I pee for England over our chicken area. Haven't got an electric fence. We pop them into a chicken tractor every night.

Have seen quite a few foxes on our farm and they have left poo near the chicken area but not ventured past my pee zone, yet!

Cheers, Steve
