Hello All

Just finished this carving today, a 15ft trunk, it's my first stump carving of this size so I'm just looking for comments good and bad so I can learn and improve.

The owner was happy so that was a good start I suppose :001_huh:

Nice one Ian, looks good ! Main thing is the customer is pleased with it, every piece I do and I'm sure I'm not alone has elements I'm not totally happy with. We learn and improve from each job. From what I can see from the photo you've done a great job, stumps are always trickier than studio carves as you don't have the luxury of moving it to a better working position.

Thanks Simon, that means a lot coming from you and I take on board what you say. I had to use scaffolding and that alone caused me problems as it was always in the wrong place...

I did learn a lot from carving this stump and it's difficult position so that alone was priceless.

Good job there Ian! I find it difficult getting just the right angle for your saw whilst have having a comfortable body position. I did my first stump a few weeks ago; a 4' tall and wide stump sat on a bank with a big drop on one side. I had to detach one limb and carve it separately as it was too dangerous to work in situ.

Good luck with your next one!

Cheers

Thanks Ukulian, I would appreciate a pic of the finished carving, did you use a cherry picker, makes my stump look like a sapling

Kind regards

Ian

Here you go Ian. No cherry picker, all off a single scaffold tower. 4 days over the five. Lost about a day shower dodging! 11 animals representing the 11 classes in the school.
