When I read threads like this I struggle to get my head round how much elm is worth to some people. I realise elm up North is getting rare but down here were felling them day in day out , madness ! Hope some one takes it it's cracking timber just did my self some beams for the garden. One of the local contractors has over 150 BiG stems at his yard. Another contractor has just finished a huge elm unfortunately due to location it was logged. 1 week for 4 guys ! That's a lot of sawdust !

Me too, it also doesn't look like english elm from the bark and wide sap ring.

The thing is I think it is only english elm that is cross grained, which is why it was so strong and a chair seat.

I've just acquired some freshly felled elm for my continuing air drying experiment, I thought it was english elm so took a hefty swing at it with an axe to split off a log, I was amazed how easily it split compared with the hard work it was to log up english elm in the 70s.
