x Laburnocytisus adamii or a freak?

Pruned this hybrid laburnum this week to remove some very deformed branches. The offending branches curled back around like a claw and just kind of went wild. Any idea what causes this? I'm sure its not normal for a x laburnocytisus adamii? at least thats what I think it was.

Had the same response from a plain laburnum last year. Perhaps it's standard practice for laburnum and that in yours the lab's taking over from the broom, which happens with age apparently, the tree not being a true hybrid but a mixture.
