Thanks everyone for your comments and advice it has been very useful, I will try the separate ear plugs under my current defenders and see what it's like. I have been given a pair of Peltor to try for a couple of days also.

But thanks for all your comments it is appreciated.

The ones that arbormonkey suggested are pretty good. You can pick them up quite a lot cheaper than £108 though. The general product code is

HUSQ5782749-01

Have a built in analogue AM/FM radio. You can use a AM/FM radio or an external device like your mobile phone or MP3 player.

They have large ear muffs for additional comfort for the user. The ear protectors have a design that allows a 20% adjustment of pressure against the head.

Thanks Shaun, those are the ones I bought in the end, they work very well other than loosing signal occasionally but it's only seconds ... A very good ear defender generally and very robust. I paid £89 for my set with batteries

I got a pair from lidl a few years ago, think I only paid about £12 for them. Radio reception is good, no idea if they are waterproof or not, work well with an MP3 player.

Two things that let them down slightly, if you drop them the battery cover unclips and shoots the batteries out, and after I have worn them continuously for about 6 hours or more the ear pads that press against your head start to become slightly uncomfortable as they are a little on the firm side. I replaced the pads with some from a peltor set of ear defenders and they clipped on to the lidl ones fine, now much more comfortable to wear all day and they seal against your head better so work better all round, the noise you are blocking becomes less apparent and you can turn the radio down a bit also. After all, the main reason I am wearing the defenders is to save my hearing!
