Tractor and Tyre size advice for forestrywork.

Considering buying an old 130/150h.p 4w.d tractor for forestry work mainly pulling forwarding trailer. What size rear tyres are ideal as I was thinking if they are TOO wide they are liable to catch on old tree stumps,also thinking of manoeverability between trees.

Any suggestions of make model 130/150 hp 4 wd tractor I should be looking at ,unfortunately budget max of £14,000 at most.

I am only in a small way so will not do that many hours a year 500max,I should say. Thank you

Full forestry tyres are expensive, but they are the best thing if you are in the woods. Second best would be the Klebers radials. As you say, don't go too wide.

Like Tom says, don't skimp on tyres - ag tyres are ok if you're just running across cleanish ground or soft brash or really careful, but first time you either have to roll a wheel and tyre out of the wood or cut a track in for a tyre fitter, you'll wish you'd spent the extra.

I've got that sealant stuff in forwarder tyres but wasn't sure how effective it was. Went home one night with air blowing out a tyre and resigned to a lost day fitting a spare, came back next morning and it was sealed up and tyre was still hard.

To be honest what ever comes on the tractor will do. I've used Michelin Agribib in the woods and only ever punctured one 3 times. Downside is that they're nearly 2000 a tyre.

 

Too wide does limit your turning circle but it also improves your floating effecting reducing the mess you make working. Also makes it more comfortable driving on the road.
