All quiet on the kindling front ?

I know someone who only uses fire lighters he says 30 pence a box

I imagine most people now use a firelighter and maybe only 3 or 4 sticks of kindling to get the fire going. You can pick up firelighters at any supermarket for 4p a block so for most people cheaper and easier.

How much are the discounters selling for then? The only time I've ever seen kindling on the high street it was in Wilkinsons, was about £1.20 for 15 or so sticks and was sealed in airtight plastic bag dropping with condensation.

So the nets at £1.50 from my local solid fuel seller were definitely better...

Yes when I looked last autumn the sheds and pound land worked out at about £1.60 per kilo. We have a few coal suppliers who still order 5000 bags a year and sell the lot so I don't think its declining that much. Log merchants are normally surprised how much they sell over a winter especially if it's neat and clean. You won't get rich on the profit but you don't need to break your back for it either why let Aldi have the cash.

I am in the process of buying another processor and the guy who's selling it also offered me a fuelwood 200 kindling machine which has the rotary bagger. £4000 and looks like new. The lack of use plus seeing low prices in asda, B&M and other places has put me of doing kindling

Thanks for the posts some very valid points that never even crossed my mind. We have produced kindling for 6 years and never even considered that it could be a reducing market just warm weather.

We will carry on producing for our regular customers making to order with a surplus of stock. Run as always as a side line and see what the winter brings. We had more demand than we could cope with when there was no timber about and the power stations were paid a subsidy to burn it.

It's possible the abundance of timber has reduced the cost of a bag of kindling but this could go the other way during a long cold winter. Who knows but I look forward to finding out
