Hi all, i am new to chainsaw carving and live in Durham, i have been scavenging wood from fallen trees in the local woods and have been making some large mushroom carvings and a bit of log garden furniture just to get the feel of the saws, can anyone tell me if there is anywhere in the Durham area where i could buy some large logs or stumps for carving, thank you.

Cheers for now Peter.

Your local arboriculture business will likely give you some for free if you can pick them up from the jobsite. One warning, though: I think all tree surgeons have been messed around by wood workers of various types. If you say you'll pick up a log you must do so.

Since you are asking about buying them, they'll deliver if you are willing to pony up.

Before you contact them I'd suggest you have a list of local tree species from which you want wood. If you don't know that yet, you might like to do a little research or ask another wood carver.

Hi Peter, wood can be carved when its green but as the wood dries fibres will shrink and the carving may crack to relieve tightening of its core.

Hi, thanks for your input, i use softwood and hardwood, being a chainsaw novice i have only been making mushrooms and a few garden seats, i use any wood from 8 to 10 inches and up to any size that can be man handled, i'm also looking for any large crosscut pieces for garden tables etc, could you please let me know what sort of prices you are looking for, thank you for your reply.

Cheers for now Peter.
