I have this piece of Silver Birch, approx 3m in length and it has this big growth round the middle. Would be worth anything to woody people???

So after 145 views, somebody tells me to put it on the Woodcraft Forum - which is where it is posted! Can no one even tell me what the growth is? Why its there? Is it unusual?

I think you've hit the nail on the head,

The reason I didn't reply to your original question is that I just couldn't make out what it was so had no idea whether it was of any use to anybody.

As to what sort of growth it is, I've just no idea but if I came across it I'd probably take it home and stick it on the lathe to see what happened

Not sure what I would call it, probably a burr or burl, but not quite like what one usually looks like, it will be fast growth, relatively plain but swirly timber in it due to absence of epircormic eyes, I would guess

I guess you could get a small table top out of it?

That comes across as a tad stroppy in writing. Knowing how long youve been a member I suspect that's not the case. I would assume members will only reply to ID type questions as and when they are sure.

If you ask for opinions, the answers will be more swift and enthusiastic.

Apologies Shane, I did not mean to be stroppy. I appreciate the advice people have posted since my last comment. I may move the item off my firewood pile now!

Apology not needed, no worries. Things in writing sometimes look more harsh than the way would say them face to face. Best of luck with it.
