The view above already suggests the street trees have a a hard life. Bending away from the buildings, toward available light and over the road. Another photo shows it's the same on the other side.

 

Now the trees are getting a good soaking. But their roots are not normally subjected to such intense heat from below.

Are these trees now doomed?

Just googled this, first I've heard of it. Looks and sounds bad, I don't know how far through the soil the heat would travel. I think a bigger concern could be the toxic smoke/gas leaks penetrating the soil under roads and surfaces with no where to escape. Could well be bad news for a lot of trees in the near future, watch this space...

I remember back in 2001 there was a car bomb in my high street and the plane trees were in the blast, I knew one of the guys the council and he had to re pollard them... and they are still there now.

 

Planes are as hard as nails.
