fungi ID on cherrys

Hi all,

ive found this a few times recently on ornamental cherry, seems to found anywhere on the tree, normally wheres the damage or a wound.

Think its phellinus but not sure. How much of an issues would it pose?

I'd agree with your thoughts.

Yip Phellinus and it will lead to stem and branch failure. We get it on almost every purple plum where I work and they drop branches all the time. But I have climbed trees covered in it and they have held up.

yes seeing a lot at the moment, even with a fair amount of decay the tree seems to hold up well.

Hard to know what the best course of action, don't want to remove them unless its needed, but crown reducing my lead to more infection

Reductions are probably the reason the Just let them go their own way. I haven't heard of many fatalities caused by ornamental cherries.

Sorry pressed send by accident. I was going to say that the plum trees I have encountered with it have been reduced heavily in the past whereas untouched plums are fine.

Agree this is not a fierce pathogen; can coexist with tree for decades.
