felling bar cuts

I do like the split level cut though and i do use it quite a lot. I've been told that you can't use a wedge in place of the bar on CS31 as wedges aren't in the course. I think you do less damage to your back with a sledge and a wedge rather than trying to lift the tree over with a bar.

Strange, I'm sure we used wedges when I did mine, as it (cs31) includes the use of aid tools, which is what wedges would come under.

Aaaah toe-jacks, now I see what you mean!!

As for CS31, the wedges arent listed as wedges, just as aid tools. Of course, as I'm having one of those days on here, it was probably a later, more advanced course that I did, so I'm probably wrong anyway. But I do know we were trained in the use of wedges, and expected to carry them if we were felling. If only I wasnt soooo senile.............. :confused13:

Wedges aren't used till CS32. A Friend of mine just did 31 and they weren't allowed to use them. On 31 they give you a plastic wedge but thats for putting in your letterbox and for cross cutting.

So thats changed then! LOL! we wern't even allowed it for that!

I use that split level cut quite a bit. It's not much use on bigger trees unless the lean is negilgible, or you have light breezes from all sorts of directions which could close your kerf. I found it useful clearfelling softwoods in a plantation situation, for example.

I, too, have managed to break one, tho' more through metal fatigue than sheer brute strength.
