Short rope when doing small trees, less rope to haul up and redirect through the crown. Perfect on street pollards when the chippers close by to a load of brash that just gets grabbed in a bunch. Less chance of it getting picked up/tangled in the brash.

Hit the nail on the head...I was actually thinking of the very same scenario...small/medium re-pollards are a nightmare with a long rope dangling over the chipper, buses etc.. Lethal. But a joy with a suitably shorter rope.

why do people have short ropes? that's not a stupid question either!! just cant see the sense in it

In my case it's for very short trees. I don't actually have one but its on the list, after a thousand more important things.
