GIS and CAD seminar - your thoughts?

Hi all,

I am looking at putting together a one day seminar for arborists that want to learn about mapping trees for surveys (GIS) and producing quality site plans (CAD). There are often questions about these areas, and most arbs that come off the tools and want to start surveying need some guidance on what is possible, available, affordable etc...it can be a bit of a minefield.

So, with that in mind what would you like to see in a one-day seminar?

Mostly, I need to know whether people will be happy with a seminar and Q&A session, or whether people would want access to a computer and handheld mapping device to actually try stuff out. This has a cost implication!

Look forward to reading your thoughts...

Hi Paul, some folks from our office would be very interested in this seminar to widen their knowledge on GIS & CAD. The main area that troubles us is Value. What can different software and hardware options offer to our business and for what cost? If you require further information send me a PM on here and I will pass you an email address!

Thanks,

Nick

After responding to another post about GIS recently, I was thinking of the very same thing as you mention Paul - Arb/surveying specific GIS training.

I have been on various related courses over the years with different organisations, and I believe that for anyone to get the best out of a course, you have to have a combination of both theory (introductory at least) and to some degree a practical element. The practical can just be demonstrations and doesnt have to include hands on equipment for everyone, but I would feel that if someone was attending a course like this then they would really want to get hands on if they could.

Thanks for your responses. Things are coming together and it looks like we'll have a one day seminar running in the midlands this summer/autumn. I'm aiming to have the price at under £100 per person for the day including lunch.

Format is likely to be an introduction to GIS in the morning, including some hands on time with different devices to try out out of the classroom. In the afternoon we will look at CAD and how it can be used to display accurate tree survey information particularly in relation to tree plans for BS5837 planning reports.

Will update this thread with more details soon!

Mr Island, if you want to email the file to me I can see if I can convert it for you. I'm guessing you want it as a dxf?

Hi cheers for that! I have managed to convert the file into dfx, though I have no idea how good the convert is. I just don't know how to use QGIS yet...:blushing: when I add a vector layer in QGIS it does the above green circles... I am going to give it another go in a bit. If I keep hitting dead ends, I will happily send you the file. Thanks
