stihl serial number ms200t or 020 ?

hi all, iv just bought a used ms200t, but on getting the chainsaw and giving it a look over it appears to have a 020 tank fitted:thumbdown: what I want to know Is, is this a ms200t with a 020 tank fitted or is it a 020 with some ms200 parts fitted:confused1:can I find out from the serial number etc. thanks

Email the number to Stihl, but the easiest way to check is, has the oil tank got a flippy or screw cap? Though I don't understand what the problem with an 020 is? It's the same saw!

The issue will be that the 020 will be a much older saw and doesn't meet the sellers description - seen that before:001_rolleyes:

 

The main diferences are the MS200 has flippy caps - if the crankcases are MS200, then the oil tank will have a flippy cap. The 020 carb has the H&L screws closer together and the cylinder transfer ports have a seperator runing up their full length on the MS200 and not the 020.

 

There were also a number of changes to the fuel pipe and tank breather from 020 and MS200T

hi, I bought it as a ms200t as that's what it was listed as, it does have flippy caps (fuel and oil) an I called stihl service centre but they couldn't tell me the year, but they could tell me that the carb is a 020 carb from the numbers/letters on it, so it looks like its a bit of both I guess, I would of sent it back if I hadn't had it striped down before I noticed:blushing:

 

but on a happy note:001_smile:t I received a proper 200t that I also got off ebay the other day as spares or repairs, it was listed as a non runner due to it wont start and has very low compression, I unpacked it, got it on the work bench and noticed the spark plug was half way out and the lead was also half out, so I pushed the lead all the way in and tightened up the spark plug and it run as good as new:thumbup:

TBH, I have had the biggest issues with old 020 carbs and tuning them can be really hit and miss. New, they are OK but old ones seem to take a lot of tuning and fiddling with. I have had to admit defeat on one recently:thumbdown:

 

I find MS200T carbs refurb up OK if you know what you are doing and I like the little bit of extra kick that the accelerator pump gives you:thumbup:
