Cost verses reward figures don't stack up cost of machinery higher cost of chip is huge.

A lot of farmers round here are investing in biomass chip burners, 200kw, and installing drying floors.

 

It suits their working life styles as its automated, and low labour costs etc.

 

Some pay up too £100 for wood chip, per tonne (and still make money)

 

You can buy chip wood here for £30 delivered and get it chipped for £5-£10 a tonne, so raw material costs are fairly low.

 

Granted, more initial cost, but over 20 years, the saving in labour etc, must make it pay, compared to hand prepping and feeding a batch boiler?

In rough terms you are looking at £35K versus £120K. So over 20 years £4,250( £81 a week) a year extra capital cost to save having to load the boiler 2-3 times a day. Plus a wood chip boiler will be 20-30% more efficient than a batch fed boiler and you will never miss re fueling it. If you have the capital there is no decision to make in my opinion. Even at reduced RHI levels it will still pay for itself a couple of times over

You no a vast amount more than me on the subject Iain but with all the extra building space required for storing chip and pretty big building for boiler and asoceated equipment. This cost has to be considered.

Agreed the scenario above assumed no building cost and that there was a vacant suitable building
