I had considered getting an ice axe and they can be had for reasonable money on the bay. The oregon ones are very similar to ice axes and yes they are pricey but they are far superior to the likes of the stihl one in my opinion, I'm certainly not regretting spending the extra money

I have a metal one identical to the Oregon one always found it very useful saves bending down to drag rings about. I am not sure I would get on well with a heavy wooden one especially if I missed the wood and it was heading for a shin.
