milling long bits of timber

That's a great technique -but you're a bit reliant on the timber being straight and true to start with and a bit fiddly with all the nails and getting them the same height.

But I suppose you could free hand flatten a knobbly log and still use it.

Yes this is only for forest grown timber I think but I like the principle.

It's Will Maloff's method. I have used it on knarly oak but it is a pain. It makes life a bit easier if instead of using nails you use coach screws. I used to use a set of 2,3,4,6 and 9" M10 screws as if they are in a couple of inches then there is enough thread to allow adjustment up and down to get the height right. The biggest problem I found was getting the line tight enough to keep it straight.

why use an alaskan when you could get one of these?

seriously?

sounds bad when i say it but i usually manage to use a ladder and slide it along the timber about a meter or so before i get to the end, making sure its parallel to to mill (with the saw left in the cut.). sure this is not 100% but its def ok if your careful and not much hastle.

No clues just as yet... we want to get it as right as possible first time but we will do some sort of pre order offer for those who want to be guinea pigs!

I've used it a few times and it seems to work well. There will also be a budget version as well so Chilaskan users need not miss out!

Okay then, no clues, hmmmm, so instead of a clue; I ask for a 'direct confirmation' ...."yes" or "no" to the following questions....

a) Will it be as long as a 6m ladder?

b) Will it be more portable than a 6m ladder?

c) Will it be cheaper than a 6m ladder?

d) Will it do bendy braces?

Cheers, Steve

a) Will it be as long as a 6m ladder? Yes as long as you want it to be as will come in 1.5m or 3m sections.

b) Will it be more portable than a 6m ladder? Yep because of above

c) Will it be cheaper than a 6m ladder? The eco version will be close to it - the heavy duty version will be more but still not huge ££

d) Will it do bendy braces? Further down the line yes - you will just need to buy some additional bits to use with it.

Cheers, Steve

As above :001_smile:
