Evening all, just a quickie for you landy people, got a defender with a 200tdi engine in- from a disco- and I'v snapped the alternator belt whilst out. My question is, if I jump it in the morning and charge the battery, would it be driveable to get me home? As in does this belt power anything other than the alternator? Also how long is best to charge it for? Cheers all

If set as per disco no problems. Fan belt drives off crank drive water pump and powersteering pump. The power steering pump has another pulley and drives alternator via another short fan belt. If you charge it and jump start should have no probs getting home, if you minimise electrical use, how far do you have to go. I have done over 500 miles before with no alternator. Rev counter if fitted will not work as well.

Have fun

My experience is that even with everything switched off the engine dies through lack of power to the pump. It then stops and you are stuffed. My Disco 2 was left with the lights on, I went and rescued it, jump start, and was driving it where it needed to go with a load of teenagers aboard when it just stopped a few miles after I jumped it. Had to get another battery brought out.

Charge the battery fully tonight, it then might get you 5 or 10 miles. From memory on my 200 the belt only powers the alternator. The power steer pump I think has its own belt.

Thanks lads basically I'll get a belt on my way home in the morning and change it at home. From memory it only goes round two rings as in it only looks like it powers the alternator, their is only two belts in total of the top of my head I think. It's about half an hour drive only it's just down the duel carriage way so I didn't want to chance it . How longs best to charge it for in th norning?
