Putting down roots and branching out, sounds like they are contradicting themselves. They are also forming awkward growths making it harder to split them for firewood, so they are standing about doing knotting.

They are doing meore than reproduce -

They 'breathe', feed, grow, move, respond to a stimulus (all be it very slowly), they excrete, reproduce, die (maybe another one - can't remember).

These are the characteristics of every living organism on the planet. Maybe except for people in Durrington.

As do we. What we do is an end to reproducing. We just do a lot of romanticising in between.

If our main purpose is procreation of the species then why are some not inclined to behave in a manner which would facilitate this?

Are there gay trees?

We are supposedly sentient beings, so have choice. A tree just grows in order to reproduce. When you're wind pollinated, being gay doesn't really have a meaning.

Not sure about gay being a choice (sorry Woodyguy, may have misread you there). The "nest helpers" theory is certainly common amongst birds.
