Tree firms in Tasmania anyone?

Hi all, Im planning to travel and work in Tasmania in March and Im currently listing all the firms in and around Hobart. Does anyone have any company reviews/feedback/advice? Would be highly appreciated:001_smile:

Tasmania is a strange place and no offence too them,I have relatives in Hobart and going by pictures they look like they are stuck in a Time warp and they all seem to smoke weed .

Very true ,but that's my opinion based on mainly Hobart and has you say Tasmania probably is a beautiful country .

Tassie is a beautiful and often forgotten by those who go and travel the main-land. There's not much work but if you get to talking with anyone in Hobart you can usually land some kind of paid help, possibly leading up to work. Don't set your sights too high! Salamanca market is a good place to ask as there are 'alternative' trade stands selling their wares.

 

There's serious unemployment in the North West of the island as the timber industry is going through a big depression and the government is trying to help the school age children of those affected with various schemes over the last few years. I would imagine trying to get work in this area a no-no.

 

In all honesty I'd just enjoy being there, keep off what IVECOKID mentions unless you are an expert in the opium business.

 

Bichenot is worth a visit if you like swimming! The lakes are good to visit too (Lake Pedder). Gordon River dam, Franklin river trip, Port Arthur. Tassie devil scantuary (these little creatures are in decline) Get to the top of Mount Wellington.......Find New Norfolk using the logging roads.

Take the ferry from Melbourne to Devonport, it's much better than flying.

I've spent five weeks in two visits based in Hobart and no-one offered me anything stronger than beer. Bugga.

By 'time warp' I guess Ivecokid means they have preserved some Victorian history - Port Arthur for example - but I felt entirely contemporary while there.

It's a great island to tour though I didn't go far north. The central plateau is thinly populated and part of the south west is still called wilderness.

Bicheno - what a blowhole and just the best fresh caught crabs to be bought from local quaysides.

 

Oh - tree work. I don't remember seeing any being done at all, either forestry or domestic, but as I said I didn't venture that far north.

Really when I was there there was more timber lorries going around than cars

Lots of big timber harvesting and also battles between loggers and greeneys

I should add Tasmania was one of the most beautiful places I went.

I toured in a camper and camped in some amazing places. It's beauty was improved by not being over run with gawky British backpackers
