Hi

I've just started to learn how to carve with a chainsaw and I soon realised I know hellish little .I would like to buy a small saw with a carving bar. Where in the Uk am I best to try?. What make would you guys recommend . I have asked these questions on the carving forum but no one has got back to me on this yet.

Any pointers would be great.

I live in Glasgow.

Thanks

Derek

Hi Derek,

I meant to reply on the carving forum the other day.

What is your budget?

I would always try for a pro saw, even second hand rather than a home owner class of saw. They are nicer to use all day long have more power to weight and you can always get parts when you need them.

Hi

My budget is whatever it needs to be( Santa will be here soon lol) I bought a cheep saw ( brand new but half price) and soon realised its limitations with regards to detail and control . I just don't want to be ripped off on the price so that's why I decided to ask the experts for their advice. I'm lucky in the location that I have to enjoy this new found hobby. I've been given great support by my club members who have come up with all sorts of logs and ideas for projects.

A quick look on the sponsors forum on here will give you an idea of prices. Local dealer maybe a little more expensive but if it goes wrong they are the nearest to deal with it. Stihl still won't let you buy on line for delivery but if you go for husqvarna you can buy from one of arbtalks sponsors and have it delivered :-)

I've only had experience with stihl so here's my offerings.

ms200/201 with 12" dime tip

024/026 or new ms241/261 with either 14 to 18" quarter tip or toonie bar

You may already know this, but in case you don't, the ms200 and ms201 referred to are the backhandle versions, rather than the far more common tophandle variant. You would want the backhandle version - far safer with better control.

For carving bars/chains you could have a look at chainsawbars.co.uk.

Thanks Guys

I will look at these sites. I should have said that I am well aware of the safety issues involved here. I have been an archer for quite a few years and I've shot for Scotland internationally. In the last few years I've found myself doing more coaching and it never fails to amaze me when someone turns up having bought a bow on eBay and thinks it's as easy as that. So thanks for your help so far and I'll keep you all posted on my journey to release all these animals that are trapped inside the trees.
