A lot less than you think, my guess 8-10 feet

Probably right. Western power delivered some poles of 56; once that were too short for the job for which they were intended, and when chatting to them, they said 99.9% of any electric poles went no deeper than 6' in the ground.

the new standard for planting poles set by western power distribution is only 8 feet but this is depending on the size of pole and what its use is ie; through pole treminal pole or tx pole etc it was explained that the poles dont need to be down to deep as most of the pressure is downward pressure

Very interesting. We never put fencing strainers in more than about 3'6", and when that stock fence is properly tight there is someting like nearly 100 ton strain laterally!!! It has always amazed me that!

Virtually none, just around the farm. About 12 years ago i did a summers work in north cornwall where i did a lot of fencing, and am good friends with some fencing contractors up that way too, Truscotts, Gt fencing etc. Personally i hate it with a vengeance!! All i have done for last ten years is tree stuff and stone stuff.
