Valuing standing timber

Are you trying to work out a volume of timber in the plantation. And then from that apply for the felling license?

Lots of maths and steps to get to the end point really. But really you need to work out a basal area to work out a standing volume per ha.

Or you could measure every tree in some set size blocks and use tariff tables.

Worth getting yourself a copy of this book from the FC

Forest Mensuration: A handbook for practitioners

ISBN;9780855386214

+1.

Must admit (not showing off promise :blushing:) but I can eye a parcel now and guess the volume better than measuring. My guess vs agents abbreviated tariff and I've always won lol.

I tend to count rows and stocking density x form height x typical dbh etc. Variables are draw / thinning stage / species and so on.

An estimate of volume using a tariff method will give you the volume +/- 10%. But as Sitka is sold by the tonne you will have to make an estimate on the vol/tonne conversion. As important or more important than the weight/vol is the cost of harvesting including access for haulage. Poor road access and the value is much reduced.

cheers

Ben
