Hi Mark , welcome to the site.

Training depends on what in tree surgery you want to do. takes longer to get qualified if you want to be A tree surgeon with a academic good knowledge then do a BTEC diploma or National award / certificate. These can take 1-2 years. NA's are two days a week at college. One day of theory , tree biology , bussiness managment , pruning ,tree id. Then one day climbing and using chainsaws.

Or if a few short courses just to get your climbing and chainsaw ticket. Depends how far you want to take it.

You can learn theory without college but it helps.

Fair plug that.

NPTC is no licence, it is an indication or qualification of a test of competence passed - it does make you safe or indeed, good at the job.

A family member has felled, dressed, tushed milled and sold more big sticks than many of us could shake a finger at, but, he has no qualifications. I've worked with people with qualifications who could not complete a job safely, competently or in a financially viable manner.

So true! the best cutter I ever worked with had no certs,he wore jeans and a flat cap, although he has now started wearing cutting pants and a helmet.
