When to use a washer?

Bolts are often hardened so they will dig in, either to the metal surface or the paintwork if it has been finished. A washer gives a smooth, matched surface to provide consistent torquing and avoid surface galling (or ripping your nice new paintwork apart).

On our Wessex flail mounted to our Kubota Compact the bolts originally supplied and fitted were fully threaded Hex bolts with a nyloc nut on the end and a steel sleeve to protect the threads (which didnt work). We ordered stronger bolts but asked for them to be shouldered upto the last inch and half for the nut. They were the same total width of the hole so were a snug fit but atleast we dont have to worry about a bolt wearing away even when the flail deck is set up level with the tractor ROPS.

You only usually find out why things are done in a said way, when its goes wrong as I have found out many times in twenty years off building models. One off the first things I learned was always cut the excess thread off bolts in critical areas,

It cost 600 pounds to learn that 😂

I inspected landrover where owner had fitted overlong bolts, they had fretted through fuel tank

So he fitted temp fuel tank in back of land rover, and thrown old curtain over the tank

He got caught running on red diesel, and was charged with having concealed tank with red diesel.

With concealed tank the c&e go back to when you started in business, work outyour milegefrom then, then they calculate fuel duty you should have paid, and multiply by 5

Usually bankrupts them.......

Expensive bolt ......
