Stihl 4-mix strimmers...

I'm sure that these machines aren't a problem to someone with your knowledge of engines but for us without, we just want something that will be reliable for years straight out of the box and without the need for dealer servicing.

I was lucky if i got 2 years use out of the each of the two that I had (but that was when I was still using red oil). During their working time they weren't problem free. You often had no chance of restarting them after stopping them for a few minutes, not until they had cooled right down. They often came within a whisker of been launched down the garden.

Another lemon that Stihl wont admit to.

They should of made it perfectly clear to dealers and end users that only higher quality oil should be used but i don't think that they knew that when they first brought them out!

Exactly.

I know I keep banging on about this, but the FS-70 engines have been perfect for me and will drop straight on to any combi tool, polesaw or hedgecutter. £260, job done.

I take it your talking about the 4-mix and not the 2-mix which the carb quote is about?

I think your right regarding the 4-mix in terms of people/dealers/stihl not knowing or keeping quiet about the exact requirements of the machine in regards to maintenance and up keep.

Im sure if dealers told you you had to use expensive 2 stroke, valves need adjustment every 135 hours and you had to use the decoke solution to do so as per the stihl service procedure and no doubt charge a few hours labour each time then it probably would have put people off buying them in the first place, especially those that put lots of hours on them in a short amount of time.

In fact it makes you wander if the dealers/stihl even knew themselves or if it was a guinea pig situation almost like the ms661 chainsaw :confused1:

Thank you for banging on about it. I took your advice a few months back and bought the FS70 - It worked a treat!

The only thing that I would say about the conversion is that it's not a trimmer that you can use hours on end as the vibrations seem a lot worse than a KM unit.

I think that you are spot on.

I think that Stihl are throwing a lot of lemons out for us guinea pigs to test for them and then finding the cheapest solutions to problems rather than making a solid machine from the start like the good old Stihl company use to do.

  • 10 months later...

Finally given up on the Stihl 4 mix. The final batch of machines will be sold on over the next couple of weeks (Long reach hedge cutters and loop handle strimmers)

It's all 2 mix models FS240 RC-E ( Hard to find now in UK) up to FS560 machines from now on.

Who in their right mind want's to keep checking the valve clearance at monthly intervals? ( Response from ST--- UK when told how much our 4-mix machines are used)

As for long reach hedge cutters, it will be a combination of smooth running, quiet, Japanese 2 strokes and the RC-E'S.
