How long does a file last?

I'm always tempted to leave a new chain as long as possible before putting a file to it (as long as I haven't hit dirt or anything) Maybe I'm just crap at filing but I always feel why attack a perfectly engineered piece of metal unless it's noticeably blunt. I have been told the opposite by people who know best but find it hard to accept

 

I always take my rakers down and give the teeth a rub before starting to cut with a new chain. For me new chains don't bite or cut well enough.

I've heard of loggers doing that, by that I mean 8 hr a day guys as opposed to tree surgeons.

I guess if your harvesting bar length softwood it's a good idea.

Would you do that on large hardwood as well ?

I find that new chains often need the gullet cleaning out, and the hook angle usually benefits from a little tickle.

It depends on the hardwood. Beech and hornbeam I don't take as much off the rakers but sycamore, ash etc the I just treat it like softwood. Hold on tight and off you go 😁👍

You should check the raker setting, and take them down if needed - not automatically take them down. They aren't always too high.

On a new chain I give each cutter a rub with a rolled copy of the Sporting life then weld a knob on each raker ......

👍👌 I cut all day 5 or 6 days a week. Usually sharpen twice a day, sometimes more and a file normally lasts at least a week for me.
