I have grown some hornbeam, sweet chestnut and walnuts from seeds this year. I collected the seeds last year and put them in soil. I propose to plant them this in my small woodland this year if all goes well. I live very near to Ashridge but had not thought of collecting beech seeds. This will be the first year I have tried this so any help on the best time to plant etc. would be very helpful.

I've been meaning to plant some sweet chestnut saplings in my small woodland for a few years. If I were to get hold of some seeds/nuts now and plant them would I get any germination this year! What's the best method at this time of year, any advice would be appreciated!?

I used to grow trees on a nursery a few years ago, we really good germination rate, but the main was getting the stratification periods right.

We used large walk in type fridges to help, as the problem with direct sowing some types, our winters aren't always cold enough for long enough.

I have a book(somewhere) with all suggested time scales to help.
