Growing trees from seed.....

Recommended Posts

Many native trees germinate and then just sit and look at you for a year or so. two litre pots is plenty big enough. I'd probably feed them with a liquid feed over the summer to compensate for the poor compost. Bet they'll get growing well next year. I grew a few different oaks last year and they sulked but this year are growing fast. Don't give up on them.

I'm always collecting seeds when I'm out an about. I shove em in little pots in the back yard and grow them on for a few years then pick an choose prime spots for them around my town. I've got some beauties ready for planting this winter. Gives me an enormous sense of well being :001_smile:

I should think it does.

I love the thought of us all just sowing growing and planting without a word or reward:001_cool:

One of veg beds is near an old oak2-300 years old. As the acorns fell I shoved them in the ground last winter. I've now got a dozen in a wee nest until I decide what to do with them next. Most likely I'll avenue them down the drive.

I haven't intentionally planted trees (no space yet - but hopefully soon), but I do get a lot of ash saplings, plum suckers and goat willow saplings in my small back garden and odd plant pots. I pass a few of these on to friends etc. and when I move somewhere with more space I'll take them with me and plant them out. If I can't find somewhere suitable with a bit of woodland already, I'll plant some - though I'd prefer the former as trees grow rather slowly...

Good thread. <thumbsup>

I did scatter a lot of acorns in my top field and there are hundreds coming up, although how many are due to squirrels, I don't know.

My wife has grown some Scots pine from seed, which is convenient because one of the ones I planted has died :(
