I have one of those extension blocks for the tow bar in the shed I think. Not sure it will make a grand amount of difference to be honest but if you want to try it then you're welcome to it if I can find it!

 

As far as chip flying out of the top goes, I'd roof it with expanded metal mesh. I just looked at prices for aluminium and it's about £50 per sheet, and I think you'd need two. So not a bank breaker by any means and a good long term fixed solution.

A net over the chip box is your best and easiest solution. The air can pass out through it but the leaves stay inside.

It's also the lightest solution. A solid cover, even a tarpaulin, reduces your payload.
