found a quick cheap fix for the clutch failure on these grinders no doubt a few will pick out a problem or 2, well we have removed the clutch completly & replaced it with a taper lock pully then reset the brake on the oppersite side to run free & are fabrecating a sliding guard for the cutter wheel that can be dropped over the cutter wheel when not grinding as it is now live drive if any one has any suggestsion on any improvments on this feel free to coment . dean will be pm you regarding a bit off metal work :001_tongue:

live drive!!!! freakin dodgy man! I know of 2 extremely serious accidents that occured using stump grinders with live drive.

Our mechanic knows a thing or to about predators (he built them) he mentioned to me about some improvements he made. If you can give me as much detail about your machine and problem as possible i'll ask him his opinion on how to sort your problem.

Yeah I know how to improve it buy a clutch for a sc252 and get a collar or adapter made up to fit.

TBH the guards would have to be extremely well made, easy to use and completely cover the cutter wheel before I even thought about using it :scared1: I have heard of too many people having accidents with stumpy's.

Imagine what the HSE would do if there was an accident with that!

Failing that can you not make up a tensioner pulley system operated by a handle so the belts run very slack until the pulley pushes on them?

but would the 252 clutch be strong enough for all that weight off the pred head stock, the pred has a toothed belt on the final drive not a v,belt so when the cutter jams theres no slipping the clutch takes all the pain thus leads to failure ,when its not grinding the cutter wheel is completly covered with no axcess, thers not enough room for a tensioner system

Does it have any v belts or are they both toothed?

When I was after a new clutch sc252 i tried to get an aftermarket one but because there were no markings on clutch (was an ogura) they couldnt match it up because they said the clutches are designed to slip it a certain torque, so I assume you could get different rated ones.

has a short v,belt from engine to clutch about 2ft in lenth max ,i did think about a tension system 1,st off when the guards down shouldnt be a prob been looking it appears only warner make them @ the mo
