One of the most useful tools is the fly press . Back in the day I was putting new " ring gears " on fly wheels for people . ( before the pre engaged starter )

Why didn't you fit them with a bit of thermal expansion?

My very first job when i first left school was working one of these.

popping holes in security shutters.

HATED IT WITH A PASSION!

8hrs a day 5 days a week.

Brilliant bit of kit.......soul destroying to work on all day!

I used to work on these at a boiler factory years ago, it was looked on as an instrument of torture when you were punching holes in boiler frames on piece work. If you were really going for it sometimes the counterweight flew off and it was like a bowling ball running down the shop floor.

Is that a murex tradesmig autolynx lurking in the Background?

What advantages over a pump up hydraulic press apart from speed?

None, the fly press is primarily a production line machine where the hydraulic press tends be much slower and thus not so good when you have thousands of units to make.

Modern press work can beat the old school but needs a significant investment in machine and tooling so works best on the highest volume work.

A fly press is a grim place to spend a shift or two.
