dean, get yourself a mask with a fan on it, and rig up an extractor for all the dust, my old man now has adult asthma, he is 65 and has always worked with chainsaws and wood, he wears the mask and stuff always has but dust still gets through mate. especially if you are working with yew . the doctors couldnt believe the x ray of his lungs, they swore they thought they were from a 25 year old heavy smoker.

what about preparing the logs for turning? i was thinking of taking my logs to a saw mill to have him make them into turning blanks, is this necessary?

I get them roughly to size with a chainsaw then turn on lathe or I've got a small bandsaw that does the smaller stuff. Saw mill will be ok but dont know what they would charge???.

When i first started i would mount them on a face plate with about 6 small screws holding it, then turn it in one piece and sand the bottom by hand (it does leave small holes). As i got use to the tools and more confident i brought the chuck, now you can start on the face plate or between centers roughly turn the outside of the bowl making a spigot to fit into your chuck then you can turn the bowl around fit it in chuck and turn rest of bowl.

My first bowl took me 3hrs at least, I started off doing mushrooms when got hang of that moved on to bowls. Keep tools sharp and make sure there the write ones for the job just enjoy.
