What is this?

Hi,

 

I'd be keen to identify what is happening to the base of this Apple Tree and how to prevent/help it? It has sentimental value to a widow so any help much appreciated.

To be honest - it looks like strimmer damage. Keep a 1m weed free area with mulch and it *may* recover...

its got age on its side, as long as there is no more damage it should survive - also agree with above - mulch it

Sound advice from 10 Bears. The damage certainly appears to be consistent with that caused by grass cutting equipment. Unfortunately a frequent occurrence :-(

Thanks for the advice 10 Bears. I can confirm it hasn't been hit by a strimmer, rabbits etc. It came under attack a year or so ago from something and then has grown around it. (Right now there are some flies and worms inside it, which I'll wash out.)

There will be no benefit in washing out any of invertebrates that might be inhabiting the dysfunctional and/or decaying wood, they will only return. Just stick with the mulching.

looking at the last picture, that damage is old, at least 5yrs or more, before the stakes were put in.
