stihl 201 failure

Two Month old stihl 201,

ran out of fuel yesterday, after refilling failure to start.

suspected id flooded it so gave it a rest.

tried later still had to go through different choke settings to finally get it to fire.

It ran very breifly..tried to fettle it to get it up to speed but it died and failed to start again.

Any thing i could do before returning it to dealers?

Pull the plug and inspect its condition. Clean the air filter. Pull the muffler to peek inside the pot. Tip the fuel from the tank and refill with fresh premix.

Did you rev it hard before it stopped?

 

When they are running out of fuel they can run lean and over rev, its best to stop the saw once it starts running out, over revving will score the pot and piston.

Take the plug out, turn the saw so the hole is facing downwards and pull hard with the ignition off. If a lot of fuel and vapour comes out, warm the plug on a gas stove of blow lamp and repalce fast and try to start holding the throttle open without choke and pulling with your left hand.

 

This will usually work and once the fuel has cleared, it should be OK or the above may have done it in:thumbdown:

Ill try these things,

but i reckon skyhuck is right.

It ran out of fuel just as i was completing a cut so i gave it full revs to try and finish:sad:

I didn't realise you could score the pot and piston in this way. Glad i now know.
