use a variable displacement load sensing hydraulic pump! and closed center valve with a flow control to control flow to valve. It could get very expensive!!

Wow - it just sounds expensive. Is this a PTO pump? What sort of costs and where would you source?

Do you find yourself adjusting the speed depending on the timber?

Thanks for the reply.

No I just changed the tractor and got a JD 6420s with a 120l/min load sensing pump and a home made splitter and it works well but a bit heavy on the fuel. You will need to decide what size of cylinder you are going to use for your splitter and work out volume of rod and tube ends of cylinder and size PTO pump accordingly with the tractor a little over tick over, also do you want it vertical or horizontal and most important how fast a cycle time, 10 seconds from start to finish is quick enough if you need to pick up the next log etc. in the short term you will think it is slow but once you have been at it for a couple of hours 10 seconds will not be long enough!!

Thanks.

Is that basically a new version of a 2850, similar HP with all the electronics. If it is we have one on the 'To buy' list, but not this year.

We are running the processor and Log splitter at the same time at 480rpm PTO speed. Want to maximise running the tractor at those revs. So cycle time below 10 seconds if 2 people on splitter and they alternate.

This is a 2 stage pump

It delivers high volume at low pressure until is encounters resistance p, at which point it swaps to high pressure low(er) volume

It makes the ram move as quicker until it touches the timber then slower but with more force

Hydraulic Gear Pumps Two Stage Hi-Lo Gear Pumps

Run it on a bog standard open centre valve

Thanks for the info. Is a PTO version available with a through shaft and male output shaft do you know?
