lifting privet roots

I've been asked to quote for removing a privet hedge including the roots. I remember seeing a video of someone using an engine hoist to lift them straight out without even having to dig.

 

Anyone tried this?

Mattock or if big stump grinder.

I suppose by the time you've you've faffed about with it you could have dug it up.

If you don't have access to grinder, we've used a farm jack/High lift jack, make sure you can get enough chain on them to gain a good grip

Mattocks are really good for doing roots. Maybe an old silky too. I usually dig round with grubbing mattock then cut roots with the ax end of mattock, leave enough stump to use as leverage an your away.

ive ripped some sizeable ones out with a winch, very little digging needed, the odd stubborn piece but a mattock will see off anything putting up a fight!

Thanks for the advice, I'd not thought of a high lift jack. I'll take it for any stubborn ones.

used my high lift for getting roots out, if you have an anchor point even better as you can use it like a winch,cut any stubborn roots off with old axe/grub axe, job done

My cousin used his wagon and Hiab to pull the hedge out when he was installing a fence.

turfor and some strops will do it,ive pulled apple trees out with mine.

just done a leylandi hedge no probs had some root 3 inch thick.

also use a ripper blade on a disc cutter to cut any large roots that wont pull out.
