The New Sylva

A follow up of sorts to John Evelyn's 17th Century seminal classic Sylva, or A Discourse of Forest-Trees and the Propagation of Timber. (which I have been dipping into recently and highly reccommend).

 

A great looking book and I'm sure it will be a fine read. (Just ordered a copy from the local library!

My Mrs surprised me with a copy. Amazing book. If you get the chance I recommend making the trip to the royal botanical gardens in Edinburgh to see the related exhibition. One or two nice trees in the gardens too.

I really like the original - about 15yrs ago I bought a copy of the 3rd edition as it contains Pomona as well (together with several other short essays bound in). There is something about the combination of the smell of the binding and the linen paper that really adds to the whole pleasure of reading it.

 

I'll have to keep an eye out for the new one and compare it for style.

Just to increase your jealousy, some pictures. The book was printed in 1679 so there is every chance the leaves in the third picture have been pressed in there for over 300 years!

Picked up my brand new copy from the library which they have agreed to stock. What a fantastic book. Will definitely be buying a copy of my own. Beautifully illustrated and packed with info.
