just light the fire early and use logs, we bbq like this and haven't used charcoal in years

if ever after good quality BBQ then look up yor local coppice group. have one in hampshire i am a member, dorset,surry sussex have a group. and just formed to the national federation of coppice groups. want to promote the art of coppicing which includes making charcoal.

our group are having a trip to a charcoal maker in summer near chichester to see it being done with possibility of a retort in action.

be good to see a expert doing it like to have a go on a small scale.

If that is Master Waters you won't find a more experienced wood collier, his knowledge is inexhaustable.

For anyone interested, he also hosts Charfest in Aug. This is a three day grubby get together where they undertake three types of charcoal production method: Earthburn, ring kiln and retort kiln.

Does anyone use laurel for charcoal production. We cut loads of the stuff down each year for firewood, but for cooking purposes is it worth the risk?
