Bank Holiday Kayak fishing

Anyone going Kayak-fishing on this sunny Bank Holiday weekend? Looks set to be a great day to get out on the water at Sennen Cove. Let's see if the Bass and Pollack have returned from their overwintering ground where ever that is! Anyone know of good fishing marks around Lands-end?:001_smile:

Not one for sea fishing myself, but started pike fishing again last summer after about 15 years hiatus. Really got the bug again in January and I've been addicted since. I've found a stunning 10 acre loch in the Highlands which is chock full of them (though you still sometimes blank) - ringed in reeds, lily beds , weed beds, drop offs and crystal clear water. That combined with another loch of similar size (but very shallow - 3ft max) and I've got some great piking on offer.

Had 25 fish so far this year from the equivalent of about 10 days out (some short days - evenings or mornings), biggest 17lb 8oz, average 7lb 5oz. Really looking forward to the next few trips up as the water warms up and the weeds come up. Lure fishing from the boat is going to be stunning. Given the size of the bite marks on some of the smaller fish I've caught, I'm pretty sure that there are pike to at least mid twenties in there.

Some big fish you got up there! I've heard pike are great to fish for! Nothing beats a bit of solitary fishing away from it all and supper only a cast away!

Very true! I must admit that I am a fairly social fisherman though and like to go with someone. I also put them back for next time too - pike aren't well regarded from a culinary perspective!

Yeh, I heard you have to put them back. I don't think I could do that with what I catch - Bass, Pollack, mackeral. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. I agree fishing with someone else is more fun but it's difficult finding another kayak fishing bod and nothing is going to stop me getting out there!

Only be folk who have never eaten them.

3 to 4 lb jack pike are wonderful poached in milk and herbs. Take big bones out, put flesh through a sieve and mix with mash tattie. Season and form into fish cakes.

That's more like it! Conger eel are similarly regarded down this way. You either love em or hate em because they're too bony!:001_tt2:

I have heard that the wee ones are quite reasonable. A friend I go with sometimes is quite keen to take one to try, though I've also heard that it's only the smaller fish (2-3lbs, up to 24 inches long) that produce reasonable flesh.

What really annoys me in Scotland is the anti pike sentiment that prevails. They get killed because they are perceived to be a threat to Salmon. Pike and Salmon have coexisted for millions of years with no issues. Besides, IMO pike are far more fun!

Yeh, I bet Salmon do get top billing over the Pike, but its the fun of the game that keeps me coming back with sea fishing. Although that said last time i went kayak fishing off Sennen while my line was in the water I was watching some female rock climbing which was equally fun...!:001_rolleyes:
