Logsplitter advice please

what problems have you had with the titan? I have the 30T one and it works fine. Have had it about a year now. A few teething problems to start with, but been ok since

 

Blown seals on the pump, fuel leak on tank, re coil start faulty, spool valve seals, spool valve assemble was faulty, ram seals were the latest and v poor chrome on the ram.

 

It works ok now but it's going to be on on going thing, as each thing fails im going to replace with a pukka part. i have fixed this myself as titan pro are crap on sorting problems out, they just dont want to know when theres a problem . you get what ya pay for i guess

any one using a cone type PTO splitter, ie HYCRACK ? what they like to use, any problems with them?. thinking of going this way as there so simple, straight off the PTO, no hydraulics, no valves etc, comments please.

They are very good Ian, just need to watch your fingers. Only thing I found is I daren't leave someone there one their own splitting with a cone splitter for fear of coming back and finding them wrapped round it.

 

Whereas the hydraulic I have no worries.

 

Quite an efficient splitter and fast but obviously a bit more of a risk of injury than the conventional ones

I have a hycrack and i use it as much as the processor it is simple fairly quiet if outside with tractor on tickover.

Some good points there Dean, there is normally 2 of us splitting and i wouldnt leave someone else on there own with it so im ok with the H&S thing. im attracted by the simplicity to be honest (like the mrs was before anyone else chips in) there seems bugger all to mess with and go wrong. what hydraulic splitter you got? and has it been good?

With the tractor ones Dean is it better to have a PTO with it's own pump or one that runs off the tractor hydraulic pump or don't it make any differance?

looks a good bit of kit, has it been reliable and how long you had it?

Better with it's own pump as they are normally high volume and it keeps it all self contained, the only time I would seperate it is if I was to mount it on say a telehandler boom and then use the telehander third service pipe or even on a mini digger.

 

It's been very reliable and they use fairly good quality parts, been running it two years now but Chris shep had it before me and he had no issues with it either

I have a 26t version, there ok and do the job well but remember most are chineese machines and build quality can be iffy, mine was half the price of a german or UK machine but i wont buy another, next time it's the real mccoy as i can't be bothere fixing em all the time. The other thing is spares, half the time there waiting for deliverys and it gets really frustrating or you ring up and there "out of the office"

IMO go for something pukka and save the hassle

Is yours the diesel type? I am currently looking at one its got a diesel ISO engine on it?? It costs £1600 and for testing the waters in the log selling game i thought it would be ideal as a starter, quicker than by hand and no serious heavy out lay. What do you think??

No its a petrol, the chinese engines are pretty good to be honest, starts first time every time. The main problems are cheap pumps, rams and wether you get a "Friday night one"!

 

don't get me wrong, it's split a lot of wood and is still going but i am always tinkering with something to keep it going. To be honest for 1600 quid i would go for a quality machine but second hand from either a dealer or someone you trust also it will hold it's value so if you don't get on in the log job at least you can sell it again, chinese stuff is really worth nowt second hand, just my opinion as i got a friday night machine.
